HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital honors extraordinary nurse

At a ceremony held earlier today at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital, a registered nurse was recently honored for the extraordinary, compassionate care she provides daily in her role. Sarah Jochum, a registered nurse in the hospital’s critical care department, received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses ®.

Jochum, who has served at the hospital for 17 years, was nominated by the husband of one of her patients. “My wife had a stroke and was airlifted to Sacred Heart and had a clot removal procedure,” wrote a patient’s husband in his nomination letter. “Sarah far surpassed any contact with other nurses from my many experiences in the past. With my wife having a stroke, I was personally quite afraid. Sarah calmed my fear and answered many questions I had. In looking at the situation, she took fantastic care of two patients – my wife and me. I’ve never had any nurse do what Sarah did.”

Nominees were also recognized at today’s ceremony.

“Nurses are heroes every day,” said Judy Balcitis, chief nursing officer at HSHS Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s hospitals. “It’s important that our nurses know their work is highly valued, and the DAISY Award provides a way for us to do that.”

Today’s ceremony marked the first time the DAISY Award has been given at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital. HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital will celebrate their first DAISY Award winner in the upcoming year.
