Birthing Options

At HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital we respect your choices when it comes to what type of birthing experience you want. We let you take the lead. And offer you the following birthing options:

Medication-Free

Some laboring mothers want to experience the birth of their baby medication–free. We support any choice you make and have nurses available to coach you on breathing and relaxing.

IV Medication and Epidural

For those needing greater relief, intravenous medications and epidurals are available. Of course, it’s always okay to change your mind, as we pledge to remain flexible if that happens.

Birthing Hammock

Mothers have the choice of using a birthing hammock during labor. A birthing hammock is made of a large piece of cloth that hangs from the ceiling of your room. The hammock is designed to enhance comfort, positioning and mobility during labor.

Water Birth

We offer the option of having a water birth. Water births can reduce the stress during labor and delivery. Some women choose to labor in the water and get out for delivery. Other women decide to stay in the water for the delivery as well. You must make arrangements in advance and meet the criteria in order to take advantage of this option. If you are considering a water birth, please talk with your doctor or midwife to see if your situation qualifies you for this option.

Technology

You can take comfort in the fact that should any complications take place during the birth of your baby, we are fully equipped to handle them. In fact, anesthesiologists who work with Sacred Heart Hospital have been so impressed by our “best-of-the-best practice” when it comes to quick reaction times and excellent outcomes during emergency Cesarean sections, that they have arranged for us to share our procedure with other hospitals.

Some of the innovative obstetrical technologies you’ll find at Sacred Heart Hospital include:

  • A Level II special care nursery to provide for infants with extraordinary needs.

  • A central monitoring system, which allows our nurses to keep a close eye on you and your baby—tracking every heartbeat and contraction. When and if a problem occurs the system immediately alerts the nursing staff.
  • Ultrasound technology that permits doctors to quickly check the well-being and position of your baby.
  • Our infant safety and security system sounds an alarm and locks down the hospital doors should an infant be taken too close to an exit.
  • A noninvasive Bilickeck monitor to measure bilirubin level using light. A procedure that doesn't even wake most sleeping babies.
