Care beyond care
The moment you’re diagnosed, you become a cancer survivor and start fighting — and healing — like one. While your oncology team treats your cancer, your team gives you the helping hand, guidance and support you need to heal the whole you. Studies have shown that up to 95% of all cancer patients can benefit from the type of services offered. It’s a revolutionary approach to cancer care.
A guide, a friend
Survivorship starts with a friend in your corner — who we call a navigator. Your navigator will be available from the day you’re diagnosed to provide you with any assistance you may need. They help you “navigate” not just your cancer treatment, but also the supportive services provided including: rehabilitation therapies, nutrition advice, massage, healing arts, emotional care, financial counseling, spiritual support and more.
The Cancer Survivorship program is one of the largest and most comprehensive groups in the nation for cancer survivorship services, and the only group in Wisconsin routinely providing pre-treatment rehabilitation. Our team is ready to help you get started with our services, answer any questions, explain your options, or just listen. Call the HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital Regional Cancer Center at (715) 717-3929 for more information.
The Mission: revitalize energy, mobility and spirit
The team is here to help you with any type of need that may come up before, during or after your cancer treatment. Services include pretreatment rehabilitation at diagnosis, throughout and after treatment, and a host of healing, helping and renewal resources. Many therapies are billable to insurance, and those that aren’t are offered for a nominal fee or are free of charge. We are here to ease your journey.
One of the best ways to limit cancer treatment issues is to get ahead of them. Started upon diagnosis, our pretreatment rehabilitation helps you be as strong and prepared as possible for treatment. It may include exercises to improve strength and endurance, nutrition counseling or strategies to help you decrease stress.
Physical therapy is available both during and after treatment. It can undo side effects from treatment and improve your daily life and overall recovery so you’re able to live as fully as possible. Based on individual need, exercise, lymphedema therapy, manual therapy or resistance and strength training, may be incorporated. For information about how to enroll, please call Physical Therapy at 715-717-4338.
Occupational therapy helps you establish routines and increase your quality of life in many ways. We will help you overcome challenges with everyday activities like eating, dressing and bathing, lymphedema care and more.
Some forms of cancer treatment create challenges related to the mouth, including eating, swallowing and speech. Fortunately, most conditions can benefit from expert therapy.
During cancer treatment, some people experience swelling known as lymphedema. Treatments to improve the area include:
- Lymphatic drainage
- Compression bandaging
- Skin care
- Physical and occupational therapy
- Personalized home exercise program
- Nutrition & dietary services
Eating the right kinds of foods before, during and after cancer treatment can help you feel better, stay stronger and heal faster. That’s why we have a dietitian dedicated to patients with cancer. Good nutrition is especially important because both the illness and its treatments can change the way you eat and absorb nutrients. You may also notice an effect on the way your body tolerates certain foods. Our dietitian will work with you to determine your personal nutrition needs.
Emotional wellness & behavioral care
It is only natural that cancer can leave you feeling distraught, confused and emotionally drained. We’re here for you whether you’re looking for individual, couple, group or family support to improve emotional, behavioral and relationship concerns, such as:
- Coping with medical conditions
- Pain management
- Behavioral concerns
- Stress management
- Relationship issues
- Chemical dependency
- Grief and loss
- Integrative therapy
Integrative therapies complement conventional cancer treatment and are proven to improve cancer-related side effects and help you feel relaxed and refreshed. Options include massage therapy, acupuncture, aromatherapy, stress-reducing guided imagery, aesthetic services and more to help cope with stress, pain, nausea and depression, and produce an overall feeling of well-being.
True healing improves more than physical symptoms. It uplifts your spirit and inspires you to embrace the moment. In healing arts, facilitators guide patients and their families through hands-on creative projects in a soothing, compassionate environment to reduce stress, build friendships and enable faster healing. Healing arts workshops are available throughout the year and include a wide range of activities such as jewelry making, woodworking and ceramics.
Of course, no one plans on a cancer diagnosis, or the lost work time and wages that may result. We believe financial circumstances should never be a barrier to getting exceptional care. Our trusted experts can help you address and manage the costs of care, plus identify outside resources that may be able to assist with the financial impact of your treatment.
Strengthening or renewing faith is pivotal for many patients during this time. Spirituality and religion help many patients and families find deeper meaning and experience a sense of personal growth during cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery. We are able to connect patients and their families with pillars in nearly all denominations as well as options for nondenominational support.
Meeting with people facing similar challenges can be both highly informative and deeply comforting. Supporting communities present information, provide comfort, teach coping skills and provide a place for people to share common concerns and emotional support.
Community resource connections
Opportunities for support certainly do not end outside our walls. Whether you need a source for in-home medical equipment, information on community programs, caregiver education or anything at all, we will gladly help connect you with the organizations that can best help.
