Peter Cataldo, Ph.D., receives second-annual Father Lawrence Dunklee Excellence in Ethics Award

Eau Claire, WI – On August 20, Peter Cataldo, Ph.D., chief healthcare ethicist for the Archdiocese of Boston, was awarded the second-annual Father Lawrence Dunklee Excellence in Ethics Award at the sold-out 2013 Excellence in Ethics Symposium, which took place at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire on the same day.

The award, given annually at the hospital’s Ethics Symposium and named after the late Father Dunklee – founder of the hospital’s Center for Spiritual Care – is designed to highlight the deep connection between the Roman Catholic hierarchy and the ministry of healthcare in the field of ethics. The annual winner of the award exemplifies Father Dunklee’s spirit and devotion to the field of Catholic healthcare ethics.

“Father Dunklee’s expertise in ethics provided a steady voice and a calming influence during times when difficult healthcare decisions needed to be made,” said Monsignor Edmund Klimek, senior priest chaplain at Sacred Heart Hospital. “We are very pleased to be giving this award annually in his honor.”

Dr. Cataldo is the chief healthcare ethicist for the Archdiocese of Boston. In this position, he provides ethics services to the Catholic hospitals of the Steward Health Care System and provides system-wide collaboration on ethics. Prior to his current position, Dr. Cataldo was the ethicist and director of the Office of Catholic Identity at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, New Hampshire. Dr. Cataldo was also an ethicist with The National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia for nearly 19 years. Dr. Cataldo holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a certificate of study in soviet studies from Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire. He holds a master’s degree and a doctorate degree in philosophy from Saint Louis University.

This year’s Ethics Symposium featured presentations from Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley, OFM Cap., of the Archdiocese of Boston, as well as Dr. Cataldo.
