Inspirations, Friday, November 9

by Emmy B.

I was reading a book the other day by the great spiritual writer, Henri Nouwen. In a reflection entitled, “Choosing Joy,” he says the following:

“Joy is what makes life worth living, but for many, joy seems hard to find. Strange as it may sound, we can choose joy. Two people can be part of the same event, but one may choose to live it quite differently than the other. One may choose to trust that what happened, painful as it may be, holds a promise. The other may choose despair and be destroyed by it.  What makes us human is precisely this freedom of choice.”

I’ve never thought too much about if I “choose joy.” I guess this concept goes along the same lines of seeing the glass as half full or half empty. When I have a struggle in my life, do I see it as a detriment or something that can make me grow and ultimately become a better person? How often do I look for the promise of greater things to come?

 Note to self: Choose joy.
