FAQ

The following is a list of frequently asked questions about our department:

What do I need to bring with me to my appointment?

To ensure that your appointment proceeds smoothly, please bring with you your insurance card, the completed questionnaire that was mailed to you and any medications that you are currently taking.

How long can I expect to stay in the hospital following my surgery or procedure?
The length of your hospital stay depends on several variables, including the type of procedure you have and your personal health needs.

What is the expected recovery time following my surgery?
Recovery time is different for everyone. Your recovery time will be determined by the type of procedure you have, your health and your adherence to the post-operative instructions given to you by your physician.

How many procedures do the Brain & Spine Institute surgeons perform annually?
In 2006, our three neurosurgeons performed almost 500 neurosurgical procedures.

When was the Brain & Spine Institute established?
The Brain & Spine Institute was established in 2002 when Dr. Kamal Thapar and Dr. Phillip Porter joined the medical staff. Together, with Dr. Gary Gasser, who was already performing neurosurgical procedures at Sacred Heart Hospital, the Brain & Spine Institute was born.

Can my loved one spend the night at the hospital with me?

There is usually space available to allow a spouse or relative to spend the night. This depends on whether you, as a patient, are sharing a room and if your loved one’s stay will affect that person’s needs.

How much pain will I have after surgery?
The amount of pain you may experience after your surgery is highly individualized based on such things as the type of surgery, the amount of pain medication used prior to surgery, your age and the amount of assistance you have at home. The staff at our hospital and the staff in your surgeon’s office will make every effort to manage your pain effectively.

Who will answer my questions when I get home from surgery?
The Brain & Spine Institute staff can be reached at any time, day or night, to answer your questions. There is always a neurosurgeon on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition, we have a highly-qualified physician assistant and neurosurgical nurse specialists on call to assist you with any problems or questions.
