  Q. What is strep throat?

A. Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the inside of the throat. It is caused by the bacterial species Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as Group A Streptococcus.

Q. What are the symptoms?

A. Symptoms include:
• sore throat that is red and swollen with grayish white patches
• high fever
• headache
• swollen lymph nodes
• sometimes there may be abdominal pain and vomiting or a rash

Q. How is it treated?

A. A throat swab will determine if your child has strep throat. Once a diagnosis is determined, an antibiotic can be prescribed.

Q. When is it okay for my child to return to school?

A. If your child has been on antibiotics for 24 hours and is fever free, he or she can return to class.
