Ask Dr. Jensen - Cold and Cough Medicines and Children

Untitled Document

Q. How was the age of 4 determined?

A. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in response to safety concerns, the leading manufacturers of children’s cold and cough medicines are voluntarily changing the labels on these products to state that they should not be used in children younger than 4 years of age.

Q. What should I do if my child is sick?

A. The most important things you can know, as a parent, involve specific warnings and interactions for every product you may give your child to treat his or her symptoms. While most medicines are safe and effective when used as directed, rare adverse reactions have occurred in young children. If you have any questions, it is important to talk with your pediatrician.
