Q. What are the benefits of breastfeeding?

A. The benefits of breastfeeding are numerous. The most important being that your milk is made to order for your baby. It will provide your baby with the specific nutrients he or she needs to grow, both in size and maturity.

Q. How long should I breastfeed?

A. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months, and thereafter for as long as mother and baby desire.

Q. Should I avoid certain foods while I’m breastfeeding?

A. Most mothers are able to eat anything they want. However, there are some babies whose digestive systems are not fully mature, and spicy and gassy foods may make them fussy. Chocolate and caffeine may also give them problems.  As your baby’s digestive system matures, he or she will not be affected as much by what you eat.
