Frequently Asked Questions

Here is a list of frequently asked questions about our department:

Who can I call to determine if I’m in labor or when I should come in?
Since we are not able to give medical advice over the phone, you should contact your doctor or midwife.

What should I bring with me?
We recommend bringing cameras and chargers, along with extra batteries; warm socks, slippers and robes; toiletries; nursing bras; a copy of your birth plan; lip balm; snacks for your coach; a call list and calling card (or cell phone and charger); birth announcements; a homecoming outfit for Baby; and an inspected infant car seat.

Where should I park?
Free parking is available in the main hospital lot.

Can my husband and/or other children room with me?
Absolutely. A sofa-sleeper in your room is provided for comfort, and siblings are welcome to stay overnight. Three of our postpartum rooms feature queen-size “family beds,” designed to provide a more home-like atmosphere.

When can I receive visitors?
When you are in your labor room, you may have visitors as you desire. For safety and privacy reasons, visitors may not be in the hallways. If they are not in your room, they should use the lounge. After delivery, visitors may come anytime, although you might ask them to avoid the two hours between 2 and 4 p.m. We attempt to reserve this time for bonding between new parents and their babies.

Other things to keep in mind:

  • Make arrangements for someone to take care of your pets, bring in the mail, pick up the newspaper and handle other household tasks while you’re at the hospital.
  • Have your baby’s car seat inspected and installed before you come in.
  • Be aware that no latex balloons are allowed in the hospital.
  • Mention to prospective visitors that anyone with a cold, core sore, flu or other contagious illness will not be allowed to visit you or your baby.
