Frequently Asked Questions
The following are frequently asked questions from patients receiving radiation therapy:
Will I lose my hair?
Radiation only affects the area being treated. If we treat your head, you will lose your hair. It is important to know that hair loss is temporary and will grow back. If you lose your hair from the radiation therapy, please contact your American Cancer Society Patient Navigator. He or she can assist you with obtaining a wig or other head coverings. Low-cost or no-cost options for wigs and head coverings are usually available.
Can I use deodorant?
You can use deodorant as long as we are not treating under your arm.
How many days will I be treated?
That will be determined by the radiation oncologist. You may discuss this with him or her during your consultation.
How long will a treatment last?
The actual treatment will only take a few minutes. Positioning is the longest part of your treatment. Daily treatments usually take 10-20 minutes.
Will the radiation treatments make me sick?
They only affect the area we are treating. If we are treating your stomach or intestines you may feel nauseated. This should be discussed further with your radiation oncologist.
Will the radiation stay in me?
The radiation stops as soon as the machine stops. No radiation will linger, and you will not be radioactive.
Can I diet?
No. You need to maintain your current weight. You should eat balanced meals that include all of the basic food groups.
Will the simulation tattoos wash off?
If radiation therapy is advised, and you choose to proceed, a simulation will be arranged. A simulation includes marking your skin with a few small dot-like tattoos to aide the radiation therapists in aligning your body for daily treatment. These tattoos will not wash off. They are permanent marks. You can shower and bathe as you normally would.
What if I am unable to come in for a treatment?
It is important to keep your daily radiation therapy appointments as scheduled. Please call to notify us if you cannot keep your appointment. If you miss a day, it will be added on to the end of your treatments.
